Ruden McClosky’s Utilities & Energy Practice Group serves the legal, regulatory-related and planning needs of municipal and investor-owned energy companies and regulated utilities in Florida. Attorneys in the Utilities & Energy practice represent and counsel utility concerns as well as other governmental, industrial, agricultural, banking and real estate development clients throughout the State. 

The statewide practice comprises attorneys in the areas of administrative, environmental, land use, litigation, public finance and lobbying, including:  a former General Counsel for the Public Service Commission in Tallahassee,  and previous Director of Air Resource Management for the Florida Department of Environmental Protection; a former chief contracts counsel for Orange County, FL; a former Special Counsel to United States Senator Bob Graham; and a former general counsel to St.John’s Water Management District.  

Ruden McClosky’s Utilities & Energy Practice attorneys have substantial experience in the area of public utility & energy  law and handle an array of matters involving clean air, utility plant and transmission line siting, electric generating facilities,  renewable energy,  water and wastewater, climate change-related issues as well as telecommunications issues

Our attorneys have worked with early stage alternative energy and energy efficiency companies to help them identify federal, state, and local business incentives. They have assisted state agencies in rethinking their policies toward promoting alternative energy manufacturing and their regulatory approaches on energy issues, and they have worked with state universities to commercialize advanced renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies.

Our attorneys have experience representing regulated entities and public companies in regulatory and administrative matters before state courts and federal and state agencies including the Florida Public Service Commission, the Division of Administrative Hearings, the Department of Environmental Protection, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Transportation, and numerous Boards of County Commissioners.

They have also represented public utility companies before and in circuit court litigation and they routinely handle appeals in the District Courts of Appeal and the Florida Supreme Court. They have also been involved in drafting legislation on behalf of public utility clients.
